How many days a week should you exercise?

How many days a week should you exercise?

When you decide to exercise for your health, one of the inevitable questions is how much you should exercise. How many times a week you should go to the gym, how much you should run on the treadmill, etc.

According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), for optimal health benefits, adults should get at least 2 1/2 hours to 5 hours of moderate-intensity exercise or 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours of moderate-intensity exercise each week. You should do 30 minutes of vigorous exercise. Adults should also engage in moderate-to-intensity muscle-strengthening activities that involve all major muscle groups at least two days a week.

According to the American daily newspaper USA TODAY, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests three ways to meet these recommendations.

- Do moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and train all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdominals, chest, shoulders, and arms) 2 days a week.

- Do 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise, such as jogging or running, two days a week, training all major muscle groups two days a week.

- Do a mix of moderate-intensity and vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise at least two days a week, and train all major muscle groups two days a week.

For children ages 6 to 17, we recommend at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. The overall goal for both children and adults is to be active as much as possible.

Professor Barbara Olendsky of the University of Massachusetts Medical School said, “It is best to be active as many days a week as possible, at least three days or more.”

Even a short amount of time during the day can be beneficial to your health.
She advises that this includes decisions like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking farther away from your destination, or exercising a little when you can.

“Taking a day of rest between workouts allows your muscles to recover properly before being stressed again, maximizing your ability to build muscle,” says Trevor Delaney, a spine specialist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “If you’re new to exercise, it’s important to give your cardiovascular system a break,” he said. Setting aside rest days can also help prevent burnout.
